Your Mouth & Your Fertility Journey
The same evidence path your clinician uses — written for you. Understand how oral health connects to conception, pregnancy, and your baby, and what you and your partner can do before you try.
What is established, and what is still being studied
Established / consistent association
Umbrella evidence supports an association between maternal periodontitis and some adverse pregnancy outcomes, while treatment benefit for those outcomes remains uncertain (Machado et al., 2023).
Mechanistic / observational evidence
Oral dysbiosis and organisms such as F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis have been detected or studied in pregnancy research, but detection is not proof of individual causation (maternal oral dysbiosis review, 2026).
Emerging / insufficient for clinical decisions
Fertility links and salivary MMP-8 and microbiome panels need standardized, prospective validation; they are not fertility or pregnancy-risk tests (fertility scoping review, 2026; diagnostic review, 2025).
Treating periodontal disease is worthwhile for oral health; whether it prevents a pregnancy complication is still uncertain. A saliva result can describe a sample or support periodontal assessment. It does not diagnose infertility, predict an individual pregnancy, establish a treatment threshold, or replace a dental, obstetric, or fertility evaluation.
