The Clinician Curriculum

A structured, five-module path through the oral-systemic evidence, from first principles to clinical application. Every lesson is a cited DoctorSaliva resource, and every module ends with a clear set of things you should be able to do.

About 2.5 hours total, in lessons of 10 to 20 minutes each.

Work the modules in order for the full arc, or jump to the one that matches the patient in front of you. Each lesson opens in the site itself, so you can point colleagues or patients to the same pages later.

Module 1 · 25 min

Foundations: The Oral-Systemic Model

Start with the core idea behind everything on this site: the mouth is connected to the rest of the body, and oral bacteria and inflammation have been associated with systemic conditions. Build the vocabulary you will use in every later module.

After this module you can

  • •Describe, in plain language, how oral bacteria and inflammatory markers have been associated with pregnancy, cardiovascular, and metabolic conditions
  • •Locate the condition-by-condition evidence pages for patient or colleague conversations
  • •Explain how at-home saliva testing works, from collection to report

Module 2 · 30 min

The Diagnostic Toolkit

What salivary panels actually measure, what they can and cannot establish, and how to compare what is on the market. This module pairs the biomarker science with a practical ordering pathway.

After this module you can

  • •Explain what salivary pathogen panels and inflammatory biomarkers report, and what they do not establish on their own
  • •Compare clinical-grade saliva test panels on scope, evidence, and use case
  • •Follow a threshold-based ordering, interpretation, treatment, and re-testing workflow

Module 3 · 35 min

The Pathogen Library

Meet the organisms themselves. Work through the full catalog with risk tiers, mechanisms, and systemic implications, then go deep on the single most studied pathogen in oral-systemic research.

After this module you can

  • •Identify the major pathogenic, opportunistic, and beneficial organisms of the oral cavity by risk tier
  • •Summarize how a keystone pathogen such as P. gingivalis behaves and where it has been detected
  • •Match organisms to the systemic conditions they have been associated with

Module 4 · 40 min

Life-Stage Applications

Apply the model where the stakes are highest: preconception, pregnancy, and menopause. This is the widest module, covering both partners and the pregnancy window, plus the menopause transition.

After this module you can

  • •Explain why oral health belongs on the preconception checklist, and what the current evidence does and does not show
  • •Discuss the rationale for evaluating both partners, not only the patient carrying the pregnancy
  • •Recognize how menopause changes the oral cavity and what to watch for in midlife patients

Module 5 · 25 min

Evidence, Limits & Staying Current

Close the curriculum where every clinical conversation should: on the strength of the evidence. Learn the tiered evidence framework used across this site, and set up a habit of checking the research hub for new studies.

After this module you can

  • •Distinguish established, mechanistic, and emerging evidence when reading oral-systemic claims
  • •State clearly what a positive pathogen result is not: a diagnosis, a fertility verdict, or a treatment directive
  • •Use the Research Updates hub to follow new peer-reviewed studies as they are summarized
